I first started seeing Dr. Shea in early 2019 for some constant deep hip pain that flared up after recovering from a back injury sustained while competing in my first powerlifting meet. Long before that point, I’d had good success with dry needling for SI joint pain, so it was appealing to me that Dr. Shea was practiced in the technique since the pain felt similar.
At my first consultation, Dr. Shea took time to look at my full mobility, not just the hip that prompted my visit in isolation. He asked if I’d had an ankle injury, and I said no, but then remembered that about a year prior I had in fact sprained my ankle during a roller derby tournament. I was impressed that he was able to pinpoint an issue affecting my range of motion from an injury I had forgotten about. He explained how my decreased range of motion in my ankle could affect my squat form and as a result, could make me more prone to re-injury. From there, he worked with me to address the pain in my hip through dry needling and manual manipulation while also giving me exercises to work on at home to improve my range of motion to help prevent future injury. In his capacity as a strength coach, he also took the time to give me feedback on my lifting form.
In all my appointments with Dr. Shea, I have appreciated his professionalism and the time he has taken to explain my treatment plan to make sure I understand not only what I should be doing, but also why. He has always been enthusiastic about my athletic endeavors and always asks about what roller derby and powerlifting events I have coming up. His treatments have helped me minimize time that I’ve been out of the sports I enjoy for injuries so I can train hard and be competitive. In my most recent powerlifting competition, I was even able to place second in my weight class. Dr. Shea truly embodies the mission of eliminating pain and optimizing performance.
